I would like to introduce Carissa Black.  She is truly an inspiration.   Her shop is filled with many beautiful items including handbags, wallets, and zipper pouches.  She’s a fellow FAME member and I like to call her friend.  Please read her interview below and check out her links and her etsy shop as well.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself and your designs.
I am a 36 year old mom of two little boys ages 4 and 7.  I have been an ICU/trauma nurse for 14 years. I just work on the weekends which leaves my week days free to sew.
My designs are really inspired by the beautiful fabrics available. I love to browse the aisles, or pages, of fabric and think about all of the beautiful designs to made from them.

Q: Where did the idea for your designs originate?
The ideas for my designs usually originate at night just before I doze off to sleep. Don’t we all just have the best ideas then? They have to be functional and really super cute. They also have to pass my carry test. When I am first trying out a new item, I will make one for myself and carry it for about a week or two. It has to be comfortable, useful, easy to access, and most importantly, it has to make at least one person say, I love your bag. Then I know it passed the test and I can start making them to sell. Oh, and it also has to be very resilient. I am so hard on my bags. They have to be little boy tolerant.

Q: What makes your items different from others?
I have been told by customers that they like the way I put colors and patterns together. I like to think it is my attention to detail. It isn’t good enough for me to just top stitch something. I think double stitching looks much better on my items. Yes, it takes twice as long, but the final look makes it worth it.

Q: Do you offer custom orders?
I do offer custom work. I love working one on one with people. My customers always have the best ideas and it is fun to see everyone’s unique style come out in the design process.

Q: What are your most popular items?
My little zippy pouches are probably my most popular items. A close second are my tri fold wallets.

Q: What is your vision for your handmade business?
I really just want to keep expanding without compromising any of my quality. I also would love to continue to increase the number of customers that come back to my shop each time they need a bag or accessory.

Q: What has been the strangest/weirdest experience you’ve ever had when being inspired with a new item or new business venture?
Hmmm, the strangest or weirdest experience? It has to be meeting Carissa Brown. She is the shop owner of Indigo Lilly here in CT. Her husband found my website by accident because of my name and thought my things would be a great fit for their boutique. There aren’t many of us by the name of Carissa, so to find one with the last name Brown when mine is Black was pretty funny, and wierd.

Q: What is the most rewarding aspect of the etsy community for you and your business?
I love all of the support, business advice, and supportive people in the etsy community. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. Especially my FAM girls.

Q: Does your family support your etsy business?
Yes, my family is really supportive. Though I will admit, my kids do hate having to go to the post office so much, especially in the summer when they are home from school and have to go 3 or 4 times a week.

Q: Do you have a website off etsy, a blog, myspace, any other web site you would like to share?
I do have a website: http://www.carissablack.com/
I have a blog: http://carissablack.blogspot.com/
I also have a flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22402231@N02/

Annie has been a great source for inspiration for me.  I’ve learned alot business wise from her.  She’s always there for me, can be totally hilarious, and is always ready for anything.

1. What is your business name?
Annie Howes Keepsakes

2. What is your business about?
My business began being about personalizing pendants and charms and has evolved into helping others create their own keepsakes. I am more of a facilitator in the business of jewelry, and I strive to make it a simple and beautiful process.

3. How did you start selling on etsy?
My mother-in-law sent me an article out of Newsweek Magazine that was about Etsy and so I decided to open a second online shop to see how I would do on Etsy. It was a very slow start, but one of the best business decision I could make.

4. Where do your inspirations come from?
My inspirations come from the people around me. My customers, my friends, my family…I’m inspired by what’s said, and quite often by what’s not said.

5. Is your family supportive of your etsy business?
Absolutely! In fact, my husband has recently renovated my 100+ sqft studio to over 350+ sqft! He wouldn’t have sacrificed a week of vacation and 1/3 of the garage to my business if he wasn’t supportive of it.

6. What was the strangest/weirdest experience you’ve ever had when being inspired with a new item or new business venture?
Weirder than moving to Central Kentucky? LOL! I can’t say I’ve had any weird experiences, however I can say I’ve had some fabulous ideas, mainly the collection of DIY Kits. I woke up one morning and just knew where I wanted to take my business and I’m still blazing a trail with them.

7. What is the most rewarding aspect of the etsy community for you and your business?
Being part of a great team of moms, the Fabulous Artistic Moms of Etsy (FAM of Etsy). I have drawn so much strength when it’s been rough for me, and I’ve seen fantastic growth in and amongst the team members. Yeah, FAM! I love you all! :o )

8.  I would love to share my blog: https://anniehoweskeepsakes.blogspot.com because that’s where I make all my announcements and share the personal side of my life. I can also be found online at these sites:

Last night I spent the better part of about 2 hours working on the new look of my blog.  Its not as easy as installing a new blog set.  I have to work out the little details, sizing, making sure all my stuff shows up, that sort of thing.  Well I didn’t like the header it came with.  It was over sized and had a search feature built into it.  It was LARGE!!!  So I took a few images from the set and combined them to create the header you now see.

So what is on my agenda to do today?  Lets see.  Mind you things are not in any kind of order.

UPDATE:  WOW I’m getting so much done today and Its only 11:30am!!!

Let me introduce you to Macaroni and Glue.  She’s super awesome and so easy to work with.  Actually when I placed my custom order with her, she was thinking along the same lines as I was and that made for a super team.  I ordered some pink and white thank you cards for my Mary Kay business.  She customized them with the word thank you on the outside.  My customers love them.  They are perfect!  So I encourage you to read on and learn more about macaroni and Glue and please visit all her links and see what other types of cards she carries in her etsy shop.

1. What is your business name?
Macaroni and Glue

2. What is your business about?
Macaroni and Glue offers exquisite invitations and announcements, handcrafted greeting cards, unique and special holiday card sets, and vintage-inspired blank notes.

3. How did you start selling on etsy?
I’ve actually never been particularly “artsy-craftsy,? but I started making cards and gifts after my daughter was born and money was tight without a second income. I was surprisingly ambitious with my little “projects? (looking for a creative outlet, I suppose), and I tried lots of different mediums and techniques. For my sister’s baby shower, rather than buy an expensive gift from the registry, I created some fairly elaborate thank you cards and put them together as a set for her. People seemed to love them, and I started getting orders for more custom cards – announcements, holiday cards, cards for political fundraisers… you name it. I spent the last half of 2007 filling custom orders, and once the holidays were over, I realized that paper had become a bit of an obsession. I decided to open the shop in February after discovering Etsy and spending a month or so in design heaven getting my notecard line ready.

4. Where do your inspirations come from?
I’m inspired by all things vintage and girly. My current obsession is turn-of-the-century illustrations and greeting cards from the 30s – 50s. I love to find beautiful vintage imagery, and then take it completely out of context to create something fun and modern. My 3-year-old daughter is also a huge source of inspiration – she teaches me how to look at the world in unique and quirky ways, which helps to keep the creative juices flowing.

5. Is your family supportive of your etsy business?
Largely, although I’m sure it’s annoying when the laundry doesn’t get done or we get takeout AGAIN when Mommy’s working on a big order. But I know I’m an easier person to live with now that I have my own business. I’ve always been very independent and driven, and the business is allowing me to feel like I can (eventually) contribute to the family financially and keeps me balanced in a way that housework and kid-wrangling can’t. Happy Mommy = happy house.

6. What was the strangest/weirdest experience you’ve ever had when being inspired with a new card design?
Hmmmm…. My design process is actually an “autopilot” kind of thing – like painting the future on “Heroes” (without the crazy white eyes). I just put a bunch of stuff on a table and stare at it until it tells me how it wants to be used.

7. What is the most rewarding aspect of the etsy community for you and your business?
I adore the Etsy community. There are so many amazingly talented artists and designers out there. I’m encouraged, inspired, and challenged by them on a daily basis.

8. Anything else you would like to share?
I’m doing my best to navigate the brave new world of social media, despite my age and inherent shyness (yep, it’s true). I have a blog (http://macaroniandglue.com) that I update (almost) daily, a MySpace page (http://myspace.com/macaroniandglue), a Facebook page (http://www.new.facebook.com/pages/Macaroni-and-Glue-on-Etsy/18333326699), and my newest obsession is Twitter (http://twitter.com/macaroniandglue). I’m also very proud to be a member of the Trunkt community. My full portfolio can be found at http://www.trunkt.org/macaroniandglue
